Arthritis Isn’t Just an Old-Dog Problem

When most people hear the words canine arthritis, they picture an elderly dog: a gray muzzle, slower steps and difficulty getting up from the floor.

But osteoarthritis is not simply an old-dog disease.

Joint changes can begin much earlier than many dog owners realize. And because dogs do not always show pain in ways we immediately recognize, their bodies may be adapting long before we see an obvious limp or hear a cry.

Perhaps the question should not only be, “What do we do when my dog gets old and stiff?”

It should also be, “How can I pay attention to my dog’s comfort and movement throughout their lifetime?”

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, often shortened to OA, is a progressive disease involving the whole joint. It can affect cartilage, bone and other structures in and around the joint. It may contribute to pain, inflammation, stiffness and changes in how a dog moves, but those changes do not look the same in every dog.

OA is more common as dogs age, but aging itself is not the only cause. Joint development, previous injury, joint instability, genetics, body condition and other factors can influence a dog’s risk. Some conditions that contribute to OA begin while a dog is still young, even if the consequences become more noticeable later.

That is why a dog’s age alone cannot tell us whether joint disease is present.

What did researchers find in young dogs?

A 2024 study published in Scientific Reports examined 123 dogs between eight months and four years old. The dogs represented 40 breeds and were recruited from one general veterinary practice.

The researchers performed clinical and orthopedic examinations and took radiographs of the dogs’ joints. They found radiographic signs of osteoarthritis in at least one joint in 49 dogs - 39.8% of the study group.

That number is startling, but it needs context.

It does not prove that approximately 40% of all young dogs have arthritis. This was a relatively small study from a single veterinary practice, and owners chose whether to participate. More research involving larger and more varied populations is needed before the result can be generalized to all dogs.

It also does not mean that all 49 dogs were experiencing OA-related pain.

Depending on the level of joint pain used by the researchers to define clinical osteoarthritis, between 16.3% and 23.6% of the dogs had both radiographic OA and pain detected in the same joint during examination.

Even more striking: among the dogs who met the study’s definition of clinical OA, owners recognized signs of impairment in only about 30% of cases. Only two of those dogs were already receiving pain management for OA at the time of screening.

The message is not that every young dog secretly has painful arthritis. The message is that youth does not rule it out, and that owners may not always recognize the early signs.

An X-ray finding is not the same thing as a dog’s experience.

This distinction is important.

Radiographic osteoarthritis means that changes associated with OA are visible on an X-ray.

Clinical osteoarthritis, as defined in this study, means that radiographic changes and a pain response were found in the same joint.

An X-ray gives a veterinarian valuable information about a joint, but it cannot tell the entire story of how a dog feels or functions. The amount of change visible on imaging does not always match the amount of pain or limitation a dog experiences. The American Animal Hospital Association’s pain-management guidelines note that radiographic signs and joint pain on palpation can correlate poorly.

That is why veterinary assessment may combine several pieces of information: the owner’s observations, the dog’s history, posture and movement, a hands-on examination, and imaging when appropriate.

Neither an X-ray nor one unusual movement should be interpreted in isolation.

“But my dog still runs and plays”

One of the most common reasons owners dismiss the possibility of discomfort is that their dog still wants to play.

Dogs can be enthusiastic, motivated and uncomfortable at the same time.

A ball, a squirrel, another dog or the sound of you coming through the door can be extremely exciting. A dog’s willingness to participate in those moments does not give us a complete measure of how their body feels during the activity, or several hours afterward.

That does not mean every active dog is in pain. It means that playfulness alone is not proof that a dog is completely comfortable.

Sometimes the more useful questions are:

● How does my dog move before the activity?

● Do they hesitate during certain movements?

● How do they move after they have cooled down?

● Are they stiffer later that evening or the next morning?

● Has their recovery time changed?

The pattern surrounding an activity may tell us more than the exciting moment itself.

Dogs adapt, and those adaptations can be subtle

When movement is uncomfortable, a dog may shift weight or change posture to reduce stress on a painful area. They may take shorter steps, use one side differently, alter how they sit or stand, or avoid a particular movement.

These adaptations are often called compensation. Compensation is not a diagnosis, and an owner - or a canine bodyworker - cannot determine its cause simply by looking at one posture or feeling one tight muscle. Many orthopedic, neurologic and medical conditions can affect movement.

But a consistent change from your dog’s normal is useful information to record and share with the veterinarian.

Changes worth noticing may include:

● Taking longer to rise after rest

● Stiffness after vigorous play or a long walk

● Hesitating before using stairs or jumping into the car

● Sitting with one leg positioned differently

● Shifting weight forward or away from one limb

● Shortening a walk, slowing down or falling behind

● Changing how they lie down or repeatedly repositioning at night

● Licking or paying unusual attention to a joint or limb

● Becoming less tolerant of touch, grooming or handling

● Showing irritability, withdrawal or another unexplained behavior change

● Needing longer to recover after normal activities

None of these signs confirms arthritis. They are reasons to become curious, document what you see and speak with your veterinarian.

Short videos can be especially useful. If a change happens at home but disappears in the excitement of a veterinary visit, record your dog rising, walking or navigating the specific activity and show it to the veterinary team.

Supporting the body does not mean stopping all activity.

Learning that movement may be uncomfortable can make owners afraid to let a dog exercise. But automatically eliminating activity is not the answer either.

Movement helps dogs maintain muscle, coordination and function. The goal is appropriate activity, not an all-or-nothing choice between unrestricted high-impact play and complete rest.

What is appropriate depends on the individual dog, the joints involved, current pain, fitness, other medical conditions and the veterinarian’s recommendations. A veterinary rehabilitation professional can help develop a plan when more specific guidance is needed.

In many cases, consistency matters. A dog’s body may tolerate regular, controlled activity differently from an unusually intense weekend of running, jumping and sharp stops. Owners can observe not only what their dog is willing to do, but also how well the dog recovers afterward.

Maintaining a lean body condition is another meaningful part of joint health. Excess weight increases the mechanical load a dog carries, while fat tissue also has biological effects related to inflammation. The AAHA guidelines identify weight optimization, appropriate movement, rehabilitation and environmental changes as important non-drug components of chronic-pain management.

Your veterinarian can help you evaluate your dog’s body condition and determine a safe activity and nutrition plan.

Where do veterinary care, rehabilitation and bodywork fit?

Osteoarthritis is a medical condition. Diagnosis and treatment belong with a veterinarian.

A veterinarian can investigate the cause of a movement change, identify the affected structures, recommend imaging or referral when needed, and discuss medical pain management. A qualified veterinary rehabilitation professional can assess function and create an individualized program using therapeutic exercise and other appropriate modalities.

Canine massage and bodywork may be used as supportive care within that larger plan. Gentle, dog-led sessions may support relaxation, comfort and the soft tissues working around an altered movement pattern. They can also provide another opportunity to notice changes that should be reported back to the dog’s veterinary team.

Bodywork does not diagnose arthritis, reverse joint disease or replace veterinary pain management. It should not be used to delay an examination when a dog’s movement, behavior or comfort changes. Although massage is included among the manual techniques used in veterinary rehabilitation, the AAHA guidelines also acknowledge that controlled prospective research on many rehabilitation approaches in veterinary patients remains limited.

That is an important part of evidence-informed care: using supportive tools thoughtfully while being honest about what the research can - and cannot - currently tell us.

Begin by learning your dog’s normal.

You do not need to analyze every step your dog takes or become frightened by every awkward sit.

You simply need to become familiar with their normal:

● How easily do they rise?

● How do they usually sit and stand?

● What activities do they enjoy?

● How long does it normally take them to recover?

● Are they moving and behaving the same way they did several months ago?

Watching for patterns over time gives you something more useful than a single snapshot. It gives you information you can bring to the professionals caring for your dog.

Arthritis may become more common with age, but it does not necessarily begin when the muzzle turns gray. Supporting mobility is not only something we do for elderly dogs. It is part of caring for the body throughout a dog’s life.

Learn their normal. Notice their changes. Advocate for their comfort.
